Don't install Internet Explorer 8 on a SharePoint machine. What will happen? You will no longer have access to any of your SharePoint Web Applications. You will be prompted for your credentials – and prompted and prompted and … At the end, you'll get an empty page and if you check your IIS log files, you'll see 401 erros. Why it happens? I have no clue at all… But it seems that others have the same problem. What to do against it? Simply de-install Internet Exlorer 8 and – it works… If anybody knows what to do / configure / pray / pay or whatsoever, please let me know! Frustated, but at least with my MOSS working again |
Thanks to the guys below who have already provided me with some help (yeah, the community rocks!!!), we can now call this "resolved" by applying one of the two methods described by Microsoft.
Funny thing is: I've already documented this behaviour in a previous post. It was not related at all with IE, but with the Service Pack 1 of the .NET 3.5 Framework. (see here). Seems like IE 8 uses some kind of mecanism to tighten down security on the loopback adapter.
Anyway – if my post can help anyone not to lose time on this I'm happy and have learned again two things:
- Installing a new software has sometimes "magical" side effects.
- The SharePoint community rocks!
Have a great day!
