Merry Xmas MOSS/WSS Service Pack 1 is here!

December 11th, 2007 by jmedero

Hey guys so I guess all the rumors were right and MS has given us consultants/customers an early xmas gift….yup service pack 1 is here!!  There are a ton of issues that SP 1 fixes.

For WSS SP1 fixes go here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936988

For MOSS SP1 fixes go here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936984 (this link is not currently active but I suspect it will be very soon)

So what are you waiting for go download these Service Packs and remeber to always patch your Dev and Staging environments first if at all possible!  Also don't forget for MOSS environments to install the WSS SP first then MOSS.

 WSS SP1 download:  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4191A531-A2E9-45E4-B71E-5B0B17108BD2&displaylang=en

MOSS SP1 download:  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AD59175C-AD6A-4027-8C2F-DB25322F791B&displaylang=en

Update*** Just found this link which you should definitely consultant first before actually deploying these updates:

MOSS End-User training that you can run from your desktop or on your MOSS server!

December 11th, 2007 by jmedero

Just ran into some SharePoint end-user training that I haven't installed and tried out yet but thought it looked good enough to pass on!  Looks like if any of us remembers the SharePoint 1-2-3 training that the Atlanta SharePoint user group provided back in the SPS 2003 days.  The coolest part is if you want to simply learn some of the ins and outs you can install the desktop version (standalone version) without needing to install anything on your SharePoint server.  That certainly makes it convenient when you can just launch the tool and begin learning right from your desktop!

Some of the topics you have to choose from are:

  • Collaboration
  •

You can download it here:  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7BB3A2A3-6A9F-49F4-84E8-FF3FB71046DF&displaylang=en

Microsoft Search Server 2008 On-Demand Screen Casts

November 30th, 2007 by jmedero

I have been messing around with Search Server since MS has released it and I think that overall it will fill a great need in the market for lower (notice I did say low) cost Enterprise search solutions.  Companies evaluating search solutions can download Search Server 2008 express and use it for free!  For those who are evaluating Arpan Shah has pointed the search world to some screen casts that Richard Riley has put together.  So I usually don't like to duplicate what is already out there but it doesn't seem like these links are readily available so I thought I would pass the word along!

These are some very nice and simplistic demos which go into the many facets of standing up your Search Server to some actual configurations and explanations.  So go check them out off of Arpans Blog:

  1. Installation & Configuration: http://www.microsoft.com/winme/0711/31250/Installation_and_Config/Default.html
  2. End User Experience: http://www.microsoft.com/winme/0711/31250/End_User_Experience/Default.html
  3. Federation: http://www.microsoft.com/winme/0711/31250/Federation/Default.html

November 29th, 2007 by jmedero

Josh Carlisle the awesome SharePoint/.NET developer will be speaking at the NYC SharePoint User Group on Dec. 5.  I am sure he will have his presentation packed with some great information/code demos for all you hardcore developers looking to learn more about the perils of SharePoint development should attend!  Same goes for all you IT PRO types who are looking to understand more of the development side so that you can look cool in front of all the dev types :) .  Plain and simple Josh's topic on site definitions is a hot one because I guarantee in any medium to large deployment you will inevitably run into site/list/content type definitions.
