I was recently browing through Mauro Cardarelli's blog and noticed he published about using the WSS and MOSS search web services. There is even a link to download an application from this site:

I also noticed that there is a tool for managing search crawl properties on this site. This is a command line tool that is very useful. You can download it from the link below:
