Trick for SharePoint Site Authentication Problem

In this post I want to answer some questions about a SharePoint authentication problem! First I want to explain this problem and at the end I show you how to resolve it with a trick.

Problem: when you configure and implement your SharePoint site on intranet zone, after many times you and your employees need to access to this intranet zone through internet and surfing your SharePoint site via internet… Its good idea, but when you try to do this you confront with some unusual errors! You get many errors like this message: "access denied" or "unauthorized access" or "401 access error"…

This error is not a usual error! In many times you can access to your site without any problem, but sometimes regarding the path of your network, you may get one of these error messages!

Resolve :  Two years ago, when we needed to access our SharePoint site through internet we got "access denied" error, but we thought that it might be from our ISP Services or Network Infrastructure problem! When we changed our ISP or connection rules, we can do it without any problem. That's mean we had a random access to our site. After many month, when we worked with SharePoint Central Administration we found a trick to solve this problem! Now I want to show you this trick.

  • Open your SharePoint Central Administration and go to "Application Management" tab.
  • In this page go to "Application Security" and select "Authentication Provider", Click it to open. On Authentication Provider page, you can see your Web Application on right side and top of the page, click it and choose your web application. In middle of page and below of "zone" column you see windows that provide for Authenticating your web application. Click on "Default" link.

  •

  • Now in "Edit Authentication" page. On middle of page "IIS Authentication Settings", you can see this Check box item "Basic Authentication (password is sent in clear text)". Set it with Check mark.

Save changes and access to your SharePoint site through internet without any errors!!!

At the end, clearly we don't know why this configuration applies to solve problem,But we say it a "Trick"!!

Of course it's not a good idea to set your authentication method as clear text but I know no other solution.
If you know any better idea, please let me know…
