SharePoint Learning Kit: Default Alternate Access Mapping

October 31st, 2007 by apearce

SharePoint Learning Kit and MLG will only work with the public mapping address set in Central Admin.  If you are using a different address other than the default that was set up as part of your install you need to edit it.  Link below on how to do it.

http://technet2.microsoft.com/Office/en-us/library/be9d31d2-b9cb-4442-bfc6-2adcdbff8fae1033.mspx?mfr=true

If you are configuring your MLG for ISA here is how to do it with your ISA and Central Admin

http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/WSS/en/library/c8ccffce-5162-46af-a3ef-1d7914e8efee1033.mspx?mfr=true

If you try and use a different access mapping address SLK will try and connect to the default address

SharePoint Learning Kit: Different Versions!

October 8th, 2007 by apearce

Some of you may be aware of this – some of you may not!

If you have MLG you need to have the SLK web part that is provided with download from www.codeplex.com/mlg.  If you have this installed already and then install the update from www.codeplex.com/SLK it will remove the option of SLK Observer which you require for some of the MLG components to work.

I hope you will find this informaiton useful.

SharePoint Learning Kit: Learning Resource Products

September 15th, 2007 by apearce

I've been searching for a Learning Resources product for a while (other than class server teacher client, which may I add is still best for questions for the server to answer) and now found one I like.

http://www.lodestarlearning.com/

Very user friendly, teachers love it and the end products are good as well.  Only problem is that it doesnt do auto marking for the teachers – well I havent got it working.

SharePoint Learning Kit: Part 3 – rewriten and shorter.

August 28th, 2007 by apearce

I have decided to rewrite my last post – not happy with it Smile going to shorten it.

I thought for part 3 I would give a bit of a work through of SLK and assigning a document to a pupil.

  1. Install SLK
  2. Create a new Team Site
  3. Give your learners view access to your site
  4. Give your instructor for that class members access
  5. Enable SharePoint Learning Kit for that site
    • Go to Site Actions
    • Go to Site Settings
    • Under Site Administration go to Site Features
    • Make sure SharePoint Learning Kit is Activated
  6. You now need to tell SLK which users are learners and instructors.
    • Go to Site Actions
    • Go to Site Settings
    •  Under Users and Permissions go to Advanced Permissions
    • Click on Visitors and check SLK Learners
    • Click on Members and check SLK Instructors
  7. As part of the download of SLK, Microsoft has provided a SCORM learning resource called solitaire.zip.  Upload this to your documents library within this site.
  8. When the documents has uploaded click on the downwards arrow next to the document name and click on E-Learning Actions.
  9. You will now see your site name in the middle of the screen.  Click on your site name.
  10. You can now give a date and time for the assign to go to learners.  A due date, if you want students to see the answers after you have returned it to them.   You can also select which learners to assign it to.

I've added screen shots to my photo album of this.  Have a look.

Sharepoint Learning Kit: Part 3

August 7th, 2007 by apearce

For part 3 I thought I would give you a walkthrough of creating a site, setting the permissions, making changes to the document library for version controlling and then assigning the solitaire SCORM learning resource that came with the SLK release.

Create a new site – I've called mine SharePoint Learning Kit.

When you are creating it make sure you click on unique permissions.

Add the learners as viewers and the lecturer as a contributor/members.

Having now created your site click on People and Groups down the left hand side.  When the new page has loaded on the left hand side you will see the 3 groups that have just been created.  Click on %groupname% Members – this depends on the name of your site.

Click on Settings and then Group Settings.

This will load the page below and at the bottom you get to check the permissions you want.  As the member group is the lecturers group you need to check SLK Instructor.

Click OK to save these settings.
This takes you back to the screen for People and Groups.  Select the visitors group and this time give them the permission as SLK Learner.

You also need to enable SLK to work in this site.  Go to Site Actions and then Site Settings.  Under Site Administration you will see Site Features and then click on Activate for SharePoint Learning Kit

If you used the default team template you don't need to create a document library but if you don't have one – create on.

You need to turn versioning on for this document library.  This does not stop SharePoint Learning Kit from working but does stop a few error messages.

Click on your document library (Shared Documents) on the left hand side – Settings and then Document Library Settings – Under the General Tab click on Versioning Settings – Check Create Major Versions – Save these changes

You may also want to add the SLK webpart to your site on the front page.

Everything that you have just read only needs to be done once on every site you create.

Now upload the solitaire.zip learning resource to this document library.

From the documents Library hover your mouse over the solitaire.zip to show the drop down box.  Click on the arrow and then E-Learning Actions.

On this screen you can choose to either assign the learning resource to yourself or to a site.  If pupils know how to assign documents themselves they can improve their own learning.

Click on the name of your site (Current Site)-  and it will load this page.

Select the times and date you want the resource to go out and also the due date and give any instructions to the learner.

Select the learners you want it to be assigned to.

Having now logged in as a learner I will see that I have the solitaire learning resource has been assigned to me.

Complete the assignment.

When the class have finished the assignment log back in and click on the assignment name in the SLK Webpart.  This will then show you what pupils go with mark.  The server has automatically marked the answers for you.

I want to do a walkthrough video but dont know how – soon as I do I'll do one.

For those of you in a school wanting to create a class group for each of your classes in school – you have to do this for every class you want.

I do know of a product that will do this for you – export the data from your MIS system and then create your 500 or so classes.  This will be part 4.

Sharepoint Learning Kit: Part 2

July 30th, 2007 by apearce

As in my previous post I said i was going to discuss Sharepoint Learning Kit (SLK) more indepth.

So why use SLK?

Well SLK replaced Microsoft Class Server 4.  Used to create learning resources, assign then to students and class and then pupils can assgin the different questions.  The question types included, true or false, multiple choice, fill in the blanks and essay style.

Class Server has been replaced because when it was first created it was a standalone product.  When version 3 came out they started to intergrate it with SPS2003 with web parts.  Class server can also be run as a stand alone product as well.

Microsoft have decided to replace class server with Sharepoint Learning Kit which is a MOSS product only.  It is a application add-on to Sharepoint 2007 with a signle webpart being used.

You have to create a new database for the SLK.   At the same screen you also have to set the different names for the teacher, pupils and parents.  Default is Teacher = Instrutor, Pupil = Learning and Parent = Observer.  I personally dont like these so I edited it to Teacher = Teacher and Pupil = Pupil.

So what if your a current Class Server user and your worried that your learning resources wont in SLK (worth a read anyway if your new to Microsoft Eduaction Products).

Well the wonderful learning resources are something call SCORM compliant, whcih means as SLK is a SCORM compliant product you can still use them in the new version.

So what is SCORM?

SCORM stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model – does that help? haha.  Well its a standard for learning resources for Virtual Learning Evironments like the Microsoft Learning Gateway (SLK).

Wiki – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCORM

Lots of companies are now creating SCORM compliant resources and I would like to create a list of recommended companies.  You want to be on my list – email me!

SCORM learning resources contain the questions for learners to answer and then the server to mark!

You dont just have to assign pupils SCORM learning resources – you can assign them any kind of document, spreadsheet, etc…

I'm hoping that even though its not the best of posts you will gain a better understand of what Sharepoint Learning Kit is used for.  Next post will have a walk through of assign a learning resource.
